    To confirm the structure of convective circulation in the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) over the northwestern Pacific Ocean around the Southwest Islands of Japan under a subtropical high, we perform intensive observations using radiosonde and Aerosonde in August 2002 and high-resolution three-dimensional numerical simulations. A well-mixed subcloud layer exists below 0.7 km during the observation period. The absolute values of the correlation coefficient between anomalies in potential temperature and mixing ratio of water vapor are mainly small (less than 0.3) in the lower subcloud layer. The frequency of a positive correlation coefficient at a height of 0.1 km is only 46%. This suggests that fewer warm moist thermals exist in the lower subcloud layer.

    The simulation results using 100-m horizontal grid resolution show a moist airmass in updraft regions. These thermals are driven by positive buoyant flux, and this positive buoyancy is contributed by moisture, i.e., density anomalies in water vapor and dry air, instead of heat. This should be attributed to the supply of small sensible and abundant latent heat fluxes from the sea surface under the small air-sea temperature difference.

    This study reveals a structure of line-shaped convective systems (LSCSs) observed around the Southwest Islands of Japan on June 10, 2006 using dual-Doppler analyses obtained from two X-band Doppler radars installed on Shimoji and Tarama Islands. Many LSCSs with lengths ranging from 20 km to 40 km form in a band-shaped precipitation system with a length exceeding 300 km along the Baiu front. The alignment directions of the Baiu front and the LSCSs are west-southwest to east-northeast and south-southwest to north-northeast, respectively. Thus, the alignment direction of the LSCSs is oblique to that of the Baiu front, and is parallel to the vertical wind shear vector between 0.5 km and 3 km in altitude.

    These LSCSs consist of several precipitation cells. The precipitation cells generate only to the south of the southern edge of each LSCS, and move northward and decayed at the northern edge. The pre-existing cells in each LSCS hardly affect the successive generation of new cells. The generation area of precipitation cells coincides with low-level convergence along the Baiu front. The successive generation mechanism of new cells in the observed LSCSs and their structure shown in this study correspond to those in a humid environment, suggested in a previous numerical study.

    「層状性降水=弱い降水強度」という固定観念があるが、2018年7月西日本豪雨など、近年日本で多発している広域豪雨に大きく寄与している。層状性降水は対流圏中上層に広がる乱層雲内で雪片や霰といった固体降水粒子の成長によってもたらせるが、雪片、霰のいずれが卓越するのか、観測が難しいため統計的に分かっていない。本研究は、雪片と霰で落下速度が大きく異なることを利用して地上設置レーダのドップラー観測から判別し、層状性降水過程を解明する。

    Based on the results of laboratory experiments on characterization of various aerosols as CCN and INP conducted using MRI cloud simulation chamber as part of this research, we developed aerosol-cloud-precipitation integrated parameterization. It was implemented in the cloud resolving (non-hydrostatic) model, CReSS, developed at Nagoya University. By incorporating the three-dimensional information of various atmospheric aerosols from the global (aerosol climate) model, SPRINTARS, into the cloud resolving model, CReSS-4ICE-AEROSOL, as initial and boundary conditions, we simulated the precipitating clouds that occurred around Japan during the warm season and the diurnal convection clouds that occurred in the arid and semi-arid regions.
    It was confirmed that this model properly reproduces aerosol effects on cloud / precipitation using the results of aircraft observations obtained from previous studies and the results of ground-based aerosol monitoring conducted as part of this study.

    There is a large error in estimates and forecasts of typhoon intensity. To solve this problem, in situ observations of typhoons using aircraft were conducted. First, a new dropsonde for the measurement was developed. Next, supertyphoons, which is the strongest category of typhoons, were observed using this system: for Typhoon No. 21 in 2017 and Typhoon No. 24 in 2018. In the obsevations, penetrating observations into the eye were conducted at high altitude. The central pressure and maximum wind speed were successfully observed directly using the developed dropsonde system. As a result, typhoon intensity was measured with high precision, and the dynamic and thermodynamic structure of the eye that controls intensity was clarified. Furthermore, dropsonde observations were also made outside the eyewall, and it was shown that assimilation of these data into the forecast model improves typhoon forecasts.

    We examined a new observation technique of solid hydrometeors using a scanning Ka-band polarimetric radar. The Ka-band radar whose wavelength is shorter than that of conventional meteorological radars, is expected to detect smaller ice crystals. On the other hand, it is not useful for observing heavy rainfall. As a result, we clarify that it is not suitable for the application of particle identification. The Ka-band radar can detect high number concentration of ice crystals above the melting level by using positive KDP peak regions. Using time-spatial series of the KDP peak regions, we expect to evaluate the formation and advection processes of high ice crystal regions in a mesoscale convective systems.

    This study is aimed at developing novel process-oriented methods based on satellite data, as represented by satellite data simulators, in order to evaluate numerical weather models. The meteorological parameters such as the precipitation efficiency and cumulus mass flux, known traditionally to be difficult to estimate from satellite observations, are successfully retrieved from a combined use of cutting-edge Earth-observing satellites including CloudSat, Aqua, and TRMM. The findings would open a new pathway for the observational assessment of, for example, cumulus parameterizations implemented in climate models.

    本研究の目的は、梅雨前線帯などの高湿潤域において発達する降水システムの構造や機構に対して、エアロゾル過程が及ぼす影響を検討し、雲解像モデルを用いた降水量の定量的な予測(QPF)に際してエアロゾル過程を導入した影響を見積ることである。この目的のために、エアロゾル輸送モデルSPRINTARSにおける各エアロゾルの種類毎の輸送、拡散、重力沈降、乾性・湿性沈着、凝結核・氷晶核の形成過程などを雲解像モデルCReSSに組み込んだ結合モデル(CReSS-SPRINTARS)を開発する。
