    英語母語話者の読解速度は成人の一般的速度から発達的変化まで一定の基準が存在する。しかし、第二言語の読解速度については、それが母語話者の速度より遅いことは広く認識されているものの、一定の目安となる読解速度は存在しない。それには第二言語の読解速度が母語のように安定していない(例えば、学習者の第一言語や学習環境などに影響される)という理由があるが、そのような要因を考慮したうえで、第二言語読解速度がどのくらいになるかを知ることは、一定の時間の中で英語学習者が読める量を把握することに通じ、教育的な意味がある。本研究はメタ分析により過去の研究成果を統合し、第二言語の読解速度を求めるものである。

    This study longitudinally investigated components that explain reading comprehension in English as a foreign language among students from grade 9 to 11 who were learning English in Japan. Commonly across all grades, the contribution of linguistic knowledge (vocabulary and grammar) was the largest, followed by listening comprehension and L1 (first language) reading comprehension. However, when indirect effects were considered, the influence of L1 reading comprehension increased. Also, although its effect gradually diminished with the advancement of the year, we observed the influence of L1 writing system on the English word recognition. These results indicate the importance of literacy skills acquired in L1. Regarding the reading rate, the significance of phonological processing, as well as word recognition, was identified.
