We investigated the effects of additives on the translational-orientational coupling constant R using polarized (VV) and depolarized (VH) heterodyne dynamic light scattering, and frequency-dependent shear viscosity measurements of nematogen with two additives mixtures, in order to resolve the inconsistency between previous works using the heterodyne dynamic light scattering and high-frequency strain-optical coefficient measurements. R did not show a significant decrease owing to additives in the concentration range investigated in this work the significant decrease in R in mixtures reported in previous works is ascribed to the insufficiency of light scattering equipment in the low frequency range.

The theory to obtain the complex strain-optical coefficients was described for the liquids from polarization analysis of a diffracted light by longitudinal ultrasound. The polarization analyses on the isotropic phase of liquid crystal, 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) were carried out. Although some discrepancies are found at 40 and 50 degree, the results indicate applicability the proposed method to determine the strain-optical coefficients above MHz range.

Temperature dependence of partial molar volume of 4-amino-4'-nitrobiphenyl (ANB) and 4,4'-dinitrobiphenyl (DNB) in the isotropic phase of 4-n-pentyl-4'-cyanobiphenyl (5CB) was determined. Addition of ANB to 5CB causes increase of isotropic-nematic phase transition temperature (TIN) (Mol. Cryst. Liq. Cryst. 265 (1995) 181). The decrease of partial molar volume of ANB was observed while the increase of partial molar volume of DNB and triphenyl phosphite (TPP) (J. Mol. Liq. 119 (2005) 107) was observed with approaching TIN. The anomalous behaviors of partial molar volume was discussed using treatments similar to those of thermodynamic derivatives in the I-N transition.

It has been reported that cyanobiphenyl type liquid crystals make molecular association even in isotropic phase. In this study, we chose 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) as a cyanobiphenyl type liquid crystal and discuss the influence of additives with different symmetries and molecular structures on molecular association from the view of pseudo critical temperature and dielectric relaxation strength. Additives destabilizeing liquid crystal phase have tendency to break molecular association. Dielectric spectra are measured with pure 5CB in temperature range 40-60 °C and the temperature dependence of the relaxation parameters are also discussed.

We investigated the effect of solute on translation-orientation coupling in the mixture of liquid crystal and non- liquid crystal solvent through the translational -orientational coupling constant obtained from complex strain-optical coefficient studied by means of high frequency rheo-optical measurements. The sample 4-cyano-4'pentylbiphenyl (5CB) is used as a liquid crystal, and triphenyl phosphite (TPP), carbon tetrachloride and decane are used as non-liquid crystal. We confirmed quantitative differences of effect on translation-orientation coupling depending on mixtures.

Shear flow orientation of nematic liquid crystals (LCs) has been investigated for two side-chain polymethacrylates having the same methoxyazobenzene mesogens but different spacers of either four (PM4MA) or six (PM6MA) methylene groups. These two polymer nematic LCs exhibited orientation behaviors distinct from each other. PM4MA arranged the nematic director in the velocity direction (the b-orientation), whereas PM6MA pointed the director to the neutral (the a-orientation) or velocity gradient (the c-orientation) directions depending on both shear rate and molar mass. Decreasing shear rate or increasing molar mass gave rise to an orientation transition from a to c. Such anomalous nematic orientation behavior is related to the presence of fluctuating smectic clusters, and explainable if fluctuations, which couple to shear flow to induce the a-orientation, have a lifetime which decreases with increasing backbone chain length so as to be sufficiently short to be averaged out under shear flow.

High frequency strain optical coefficient spectra of mixtures of 4-pentyle 4'-cyano biphenyl (5CB) and triphenyl phosphite (TPP) were measured. The relaxation strength of strain optical coefficient spectra of 0.95 and 0.90 of 5CB were smaller than that of pure 5CB. The results cannot be explained by the results composition dependence translational and reorientational coupling constant obtained by depolarized dynamic light scattering.

It is well known that poly vinyl alcohol (PVA) gels with high mechanical strength are yielded by using a mixture of water and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as solvent. In this study, PVA gels with three different compositions (0.4, 0.6, and 0.8 in volume fraction of DMSO) are prepared. The difference of shear moduli with different solvent compositions during solvent exchange and aging processes are compared

The intensity and polarizations of diffracted light by ultrasound in isotropic phase of 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) were measured in the frequency range 5 to 25 MHz and analyzed by means of the acoustoptical method. Intensity of diffracted light with the direction of the polarization being perpendicular to the direction of ultrasound propagation is larger than that is parallel to the direction of ultrasound. The obtained birefringence values from the acoustioptical analysis were agreement with those calculated using the values of the flow birefringence and orientational relaxation frequency given in the literature. The results indicated the possibility of ultrasonically birefringence measurements in several ten MHz range

This review summarized our experimental studies of ultrasonically induced birefringence on aqueous solution of rigid rod-like colloids and rod-like micelles from the view point of dynamics of particle orientation. For rigid rod-like colloids in dilute concentration, the orientational relaxation time was described in terms of the Debye-Einstein equation. This indicated that the ultrasonically induced birefringence could be one of useful tools for determining the size of particles of anisotropic shape. For rod-like micelles, the birefringence showed anomalous damping oscillation when the rod-like micelle was in an entangling state. The mechanism of damping oscillation was discussed using the results of the rheological measurements.

A theory of the polarization of diffracted light by ultrasound in liquids without strong cooperativity of molecular orientation is reconsidered from the viewpoint of longitudinal-reorientational coupling. Theoretical expressions for the change in the azimuthal angle and the relative phase shift between electric components along with and perpendicular to the ultrasound were obtained for diffracted light. To examine the validity of the theoretical treatments, measurements of the change in the azimuthal angle and the relative phase shift for the 0th and 1st order diffracted light were carried out in triphenylphosphite. The experimental results agreed well with theoretical predictions using the material parameters of triphenylphosphite in the literature.

Surface wave velocity of the methylcellulose (MC) hydrogels in the drying process was measured with three different molecular weights. Surface wave velocity increased with drying time for all samples but there was a period in which the surface wave velocity kept an almost constant value for two samples. A possible explanation for the period was made from the numerical calculation of surface wave velocity using simplified layer model.

Direct observation of sinusoidal ultrasonically induced birefringence was successfully carried out in 4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl in the isotropic phase. The temperature dependence of the birefringence per unit intensity was compared with the estimated value using the theoretical expression for ultrasonically induced birefringence based on the de Gennes' phenomenological theory for translational-reorientational coupling. The agreement of the experimental results with those from the estimation validates the theoretical treatment.
