    There is a large error in estimates and forecasts of typhoon intensity. To solve this problem, in situ observations of typhoons using aircraft were conducted. First, a new dropsonde for the measurement was developed. Next, supertyphoons, which is the strongest category of typhoons, were observed using this system: for Typhoon No. 21 in 2017 and Typhoon No. 24 in 2018. In the obsevations, penetrating observations into the eye were conducted at high altitude. The central pressure and maximum wind speed were successfully observed directly using the developed dropsonde system. As a result, typhoon intensity was measured with high precision, and the dynamic and thermodynamic structure of the eye that controls intensity was clarified. Furthermore, dropsonde observations were also made outside the eyewall, and it was shown that assimilation of these data into the forecast model improves typhoon forecasts.

    We examined a new observation technique of solid hydrometeors using a scanning Ka-band polarimetric radar. The Ka-band radar whose wavelength is shorter than that of conventional meteorological radars, is expected to detect smaller ice crystals. On the other hand, it is not useful for observing heavy rainfall. As a result, we clarify that it is not suitable for the application of particle identification. The Ka-band radar can detect high number concentration of ice crystals above the melting level by using positive KDP peak regions. Using time-spatial series of the KDP peak regions, we expect to evaluate the formation and advection processes of high ice crystal regions in a mesoscale convective systems.

    An integrated research has been conducted to mitigate water related disasters caused by localized heavy rainfall and “guerrilla-heavy rainfall”. Multi-sensors observation toward the understanding of storm-genesis and its development was carried out at Keihanshin region and Okinawa. We have identified the structure of pairs of positive/negative vertical vortex tubes at the storm-genesis, and discovered a developing storm possesses a hierarchical structure of the vertical vortex tubes in a sense of spatial scale. Our new findings have activated a new way for the earlier risk prediction system by enhancing its practical utilization, which is one of our great contributions to the society as well as the related research area.

  5. A study on vortex-type low pressure systems around the Meghalaya, Bangladesh and Myanmar region

    Vortex-type low pressure systems (LPSs) often appear around Bangladesh and cause heavy rainfall during boreal summer. This study examined the three dimensional structure of the LPSs including precipitation systems and atmospheric environment for the genesis and development of the LPSs. They have horizontal scale of about 600 km and vertical scale of about 9 km. The thermal structure shows clearly a cold core in the lower troposphere and a warm core in the upper levels. There are spiral rainbands with tall cumulus convections in the LPSs in the early stage of the development. Precipitation varies on 10-20 day period around Bangladesh. About 60% of active peaks of rainfall are related to the LPSs. Strong cyclonic shear in the lower troposphere and weak vertical wind shear throughout the troposphere, which fluctuate on intraseasonal timescales, help to induce the genesis of vortex-type LPSs. Latent heating due to condensation causes the rapid development of the LPSs.

  6. 台風強度を規定するアウトフローレイヤーの氷晶粒子直接観測と上層加熱率推定

    台風の強度は第1義的に海面水温と対流圏上端の温度できまる。このうち後者の温度を決める上層の加熱率は、台風中心から周辺に広がるアウトフローレイヤーの雲粒子の特性に大きく依存する。そこでこの粒子を雲粒子ゾンデを用いて直接観測し、氷晶の数密度、粒子の大きさ、粒子タイプを明らかにすることが本研究の目的である。本年度は9月~11月を台風の特別観測期間として、この期間のうち2013年10月23~24日に沖縄本島に接近した台風第27号の観測を実施した。雲粒子ゾンデの観測は沖縄県恩納村にある独立行政法人情報通信研究機構沖縄電磁波技術センターで実施した。雲粒子ゾンデは明星電気により改良された新型で、本観測では特に巻雲粒子を観測するために強制吸引型を用い、顕微鏡画像のみを観測する特別なタイプを用いた。雲粒子ゾンデには明星電気製のGPSゾンデを装着し、気温と湿度を同時に観測した。台風第27号は沖縄本島に24日00UTCに最接近し,その後北東に転向した。23日から24日にかけての遅い移動速度時に台風の中心に相対的に様々な位置で7機の雲粒子ゾンデを放球した。雲粒子ゾンデNo.1からNo.7の放球ごとに徐々に台風に接近した。7回の観測すべてに共通して高度4km~8kmは乾燥しており雲粒子は存在していなかった。この乾燥層の上は氷過飽和の層があり、台風の上部吹き出し層と考えられる。氷過飽和の層はNo.2~No.7でみられ、台風中心に近くなるほど顕著になった。巻雲内の氷晶の粒子は、中心から遠い、No.1~No.5では極めて少なく、中心に近づいたNo.6とNo.7でようやく粒子数が増加した。これら結果から、台風の上部吹き出し層の巻雲は、中心から離れたところでは、粒子数が極めて少なく、中心に200~300km程度の近い所で比較的粒子が多くなり、数100μmの大きな粒子が存在するようになることが示された。
