Profile
Yasuhiro Kamimura is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Nagoya University, teaching welfare sociology and comparative social policy. His research interests include the political economy of East Asian welfare regimes; welfare state development in Taiwan; the history and future of work and welfare; old and new informal employment; environmental and social justice; and global social policy. His book, Welfare Asia: Comparison and Vision (The University of Nagoya Press, 2015), won the Special Prize at the 28th Asia-Pacific Awards, sponsored by the Mainichi Newspapers and the Asian Affairs Research Council.

    How do welfare states and labor markets determine the work-life balance of men and women in child-raising households? The following points were found from the comparative analysis of statistics and interviews in Japan and Taiwan. (1) The labor market (working hours) and the welfare state (childcare services) matter for the work-life balance and birth rate. (2) The welfare state (childcare leave) has different effects depending on the type of labor market. (3) The welfare state (childcare services) may promote, rather than restrains, grandparenting.
