    This study aimed to clarify two research questions: (1) How do perceptions of livestream shopping differ between users and non-users across the United States (US), China, and Japan? and (2) Among American, Chinese, and Japanese users, how do personal traits influence perceived social presence and attitudes toward livestream shopping, and how do social presence and attitudes influence behavioral intentions toward livestream shopping? A three-country online survey was conducted in 2023. For Research Question 1, regarding perceptions of stimulating purchases, facilitating communication, and improving personal quality of life, American non-users (N = 480) were significantly more positive than Japanese non-users (N = 572); regarding improving personal quality of life and societal benefits, Chinese users (N = 563) were significantly more positive than American users (N = 290). Results for Research Question 2 showed commonalities and differences between the US and China. Both countries showed positive effects of interpersonal orientation and trust in streamers on social presence, of change seeking and social presence on utilitarian attitudes, and of anticipated regret and social presence on hedonic attitudes. Main differences included the stronger influence of general online trust on utilitarian attitudes in the US versus the stronger influence of trust in streamers on both utilitarian and hedonic attitudes in China.

    The aim is to clarify the impact of values on the general attitude towards collaborative consumption in a Chinese context, and the impact of the general attitude towards collaborative consumption on the intention to use and actual use of various specific collaborative consumption services. A total of 600 responses were collected in 2019. The results showed that non-ownership orientation, guanxi networking orientation, materialism, novelty orientation, and frugality orientation significantly influenced positively collaborative consumption attitude. It was also found that the impact of guanxi networking orientation on collaborative consumption attitude was mediated by non-ownership orientation. The results also showed that general collaborative consumption attitudes positively influence the intention to use all specific collaborative consumption, such as shared bicycles, shared cars, shared goods, carpooling services, and peer-to-peer accommodation. Moreover, the predictive power of the intention to use collaborative consumption on actual use is only strong in shared bicycle and carpooling services.

    Purpose: With the development of the economy, Chinese consumers increasingly seek and emphasise hedonic value over utility value when shopping. The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between shopping and consumers’ subjective well-being (SWB), the mediation effect of interpersonal relationship satisfaction and the moderation effects of tradition-directedness and trust in strangers on this relationship. Design/methodology/approach: This research includes two studies. Study 1 tested hypotheses regarding the effects of general shopping behaviours based on data from the 2012 Survey of the Chinese General Social Survey (n=5,210). Study 2 tested hypotheses regarding the effects of mall shopping based on a questionnaire survey conducted in 2016 (n=251). Findings: Results showed that shopping promoted SWB and interpersonal relationship satisfaction mediated this correlation. Findings also revealed that both the direct effect of mall shopping on SWB and the indirect effect through interpersonal relationship satisfaction were contingent on the level of tradition-directedness; the direct effect was significant only at a low level of tradition-directedness. Trust in strangers moderated the effect of mall shopping on interpersonal relationship satisfaction. Originality/value: The economy and society in China are changing tremendously, affecting consumers’ values and behaviour. This study highlights one aspect of this change, provides a framework for the exploration of the relationship between shopping and SWB and extends a new understanding of how Chinese consumers’ behaviours and lifestyles are associated.

  6. Nonlinear frequency analysis of COVID-19 spread in Tokyo using empirical mode decomposition Reviewed

    Empirical mode decomposition (EMD) was adopted to decompose daily COVID-19 infections in Tokyo from February 28, 2020, to July 12, 2021. Daily COVID-19 infections were nonlinearly decomposed into several monochromatic waves, intrinsic mode functions (IMFs), corresponding to their periodic meanings from high frequency to low frequency. High-frequency IMFs represent variabilities of random factors and variations in the number of daily PCR and antigen inspections, which can be nonlinearly denoised using EMD. Compared with a moving average and Fourier transform, EMD provides better performance in denoising and analyzing COVID-19 spread. After variabilities of daily inspections were weekly denoised by EMD, one low-frequency IMF reveals that the average period of external influences (public health and social measures) to stop COVID-19 spread was 19 days, corresponding to the measures response duration based on the incubation period. By monitoring this nonlinear wave, public health and social measures for stopping COVID-19 spread can be evaluated and visualized quantitatively in the instantaneous frequency domain. Moreover, another low-frequency IMF revealed that the period of the COVID-19 outbreak and retreat was 57 days on average. This nonlinear wave can be used as a reference for setting the timeframe for state of emergency declarations. Thus, decomposing daily infections in the instantaneous frequency domain using EMD represents a useful tool to improve public health and social measures for stopping COVID-19 spread.

    IoT devices that connect people without physical contact become more and more important after the COVID-19 impact. However, strange appearances and movements performed by IoT devices (interactive humanoid robots) cause human discomfort, so-called the uncanny valley, preventing widespread use of humanoid IoT devices. On the contrary, a Japanese traditional performing art named Ningyo Joruri (puppet theater) is recognized as a UNESCO intangible cultural heritage, and the sophisticated puppet motions and its unique music style somehow can avoid causing human discomfort even if the appearance of puppets is close enough to humans. One of the most important factors in empathizing humans with the puppet without uncomfortable is the modulation technique of both music tempo and motion speed known as Jo-Ha-Kyu. In this study, we analyzed Ningyo Joruri based on the Jo-Ha-Kyu mechanism, which is an art concept adopted in the puppet theater to interact with audiences according to modulation of the tempo. First, we obtained puppet movements using motion capture systems with the music. Second, we detected the changing tempo in Ningyo Joruri using the deep learning method to demonstrate the Jo-Ha-Kyu mechanism quantitatively. Finally, we showed the correlation of Jo-Ha-Kyu between Ningyo Joruri music and puppet manipulation techniques in the frequency domain using the Hilbert Huang transform. Our results revealed that low-frequency movements play an important role in synchronizing motion to the tempo of corresponding music, presenting novel knowledge to motion designers for humanoid robots IoT devices.
