A novel approach is proposed to determine the exact Lagrangian multiplier Λ for the volume constraint of topology optimization via the reaction–diffusion equation (RDE). Such Λ enables an exact volume constraint. The mathematical approach involves splitting the density function (or level-set function) and their RDEs into two parts. Both become independent of Λ, and the exact value of Λ can then be determined by superposition to satisfy the constraint at the current step. Because only a few iterations are required on average, our proposed volume constraint method is computationally inexpensive. In the existing volume constraint method (the augmented Lagrangian method for constrained problems), its Λ is determined from the previous optimization step, and hence the volume constraint at the current step is inexact. Such inexactness leads to a large fluctuation in the as-constrained volume fraction, which can jeopardize the appearance of minor geometrical features and hence alter the topology of the optimized structure. The exactness of our proposed volume constraint method can ensure convergence for the minimum compliance problem by only reconstructing and remeshing the material domain, whereas the existing volume constraint method fails to do so. The proposed exact volume constraint during the entire optimization process differs from merely adjusting the volume by choosing a level set other than zero. The latter is merely an engineering trick that neither affects the convergence nor corresponds to the obtained objective functional.

With the rapid development of ultrafast laser technology, the effect of non-Fourier heat conduction on the transient process has received considerable attention. In the present article, the non-Fourier dual-phase-lag heat conduction theory is adopted to analyze the transient thermal process of a cracked strip subjected to ultrafast laser heating. The originality of this work lies in considerations of Gaussian type distribution of the laser beam and the insulated crack's disturbance to the heat flow. Fourier transform and Laplace transform are utilized to reduce the complex boundary-value problems to the Cauchy-type singular integral equation, which is then solved numerically by the Lobatto-Chebyshev technique. With the aid of the numerical inversion of Laplace transform, the transient temperature characteristics of the cracked strip are displayed graphically to illustrate the effects of the two non-Fourier thermal lags, laser incident position, and the Gaussian type heating source.

<p>A time-saving finite element method (FEM) based approach for structural topology optimization with exact boundary representation is proposed in this work. The optimization process consists of two loops. The first loop adopts a fixed and fairly coarse mesh. Afterwards, the second loop reconstructs the material domain and hence the boundary representation becomes exact. A novelty of this work is that our two-loop approach is realized with the domain reconstruction (not just remeshing). The convergence of the second loop is only made possible by imposing the volume constraint in an exact fashion. The proposed approach can save a substantial amount of computational time while allowing the exact representation of boundary (no grayscale throughout the second loop). For the two-loop approach, its computational time can be reduced to merely 13.6% of that for the single loop approach. The optimized structure is also found independent of mesh size. In addition, the two-loop approach resolves the issue of a deteriorated connectivity of the reconstructed domain Ω once the constrained volume is set extremely small.</p>

A ceramic-ceramic (CERCER) fuel is selected as a dedicated composite fuel for an Accelerator Driven System (ADS), with minor-actinide-enriched ceramic fuel particles dispersed in a ceramic MgO matrix. The multi-scale simulation method of the irradiation-induced thermo-mechanical behavior evolution in the CERCER fuel pellets is developed. The semi-analytical fission-induced gaseous swelling model is established with considering recrystallization process and gas atom resolution in fuel grain scale. It is involved in the macro-scale three-dimensional large-deformation incremental constitutive relation for fuel particles. The stress update algorithms are developed respectively for the fuel, and the MgO matrix in which different fission-induced creep effects are taken into account. The user subroutines to define their mechanical constitutive relations are correspondingly written and validated. The simulation results indicate that (1) recrystallization leads to accelerated intergranular bubble swelling, and the maximum bubble swelling locates in the central particle where the temperature is the highest; (2) the creep coefficient in the MgO fission-induced creep model has a remarkable effect on its mechanical behavior evolution; and it can be determined by the fracture pattern in the matrix; (3) the matrix can effectively shorten the radial deformation of the composite pellet.

The effect of void interaction on the damage progression in aluminum under uniaxial tension is studied via molecular dynamics (MD) method. MD geometries containing two adjacent elliptical voids are created with different void shape combination and intervoid ligament distance (ILD). The dislocation emission and development, stress-strain relation, porosity accumulation, void shape evolution and ILD shrinkage are monitored during loading process. The critical stress required by the voids to trigger the dislocation emission is in line with the prediction of the Lubarda model under the uniaxial tension case. Our results indicate that the onset strain of dislocation emission is mainly subject to the void shape. The void shape combination is found more influential than the ILD on the stress response and the porosity accumulation.

Modifications are introduced to the mechanistic gaseous swelling model for UMo fuel. Analytical expressions are formulated to lower the computation cost. Parametric studies have been carried out to reveal the influence of intergranular resolution rate, hydrostatic pressure, and grain-boundary diffusion enhancement factor. The modified mechanistic swelling model is incorporated to perform the finite element (FE) simulation. This mechanistic model demonstrates comparably high efficiency toward the empirical swelling model. The simulated results by the mechanistic swelling model yield good agreement with the measured data.
