The diurnal cycle of precipitation is important to the hydroclimate in the Himalayas in summer; however, features of the diurnal cycle that affect precipitation from the foothills to glacierized, high-elevation areas are poorly understood. We investigated the diurnal cycle of precipitation using 3 years of in situ observations recorded close to a glacier at 4,806 m asl, and 17 years of data from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation radar (PR) and the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrieval for Global Precipitation Measurement (IMERG). The mechanisms that drive the diurnal cycle were examined using hourly European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts Re-Analysis fifth generation (ERA5) data. In situ observations showed that the diurnal precipitation cycle has daytime and nighttime peaks, which both consist of high rainfall frequency and low rainfall intensity. In addition, twice-daily maxima exist in the TRMM PR data, particularly over two rain bands at around 500–1,000 m asl, and at ∼2,000 m asl. Convective-type rainfall, with a lower rain-top height, occurs in the daytime, whereas stratiform-type rain, with a higher rain-top height, occurs at night, particularly over terrain at elevations above ∼1,500 m asl. Land surface processes likely cause the two peaks in the diurnal cycle. Daytime surface heating drives upslope flows that promote condensation. At night, surface cooling over the plain to the south of the Himalayas causes low-level monsoon flows to accelerate, creating a nocturnal jet, which results in large-scale moisture flux convergence over the southern slopes.

Convective variability at submonthly time scales (7–25 days) over the Yangtze and Huaihe River basins (YHRBs) and associated large-scale atmospheric circulation during the mei-yu season were examined using interpolated outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) and NCEP–NCAR reanalysis data for 12 yr having active submonthly convective fluctuation over the YHRBs within the period 1979–2004. Correlations between convection anomalies over the YHRBs and upper-level streamfunction anomalies at every grid point show two contrasting patterns. One pattern exhibits high correlations along the northern to eastern peripheries of the Tibetan Plateau (defined as the NET pattern), whereas the other has high correlations across the Tibetan Plateau (defined as the AT pattern). Composite analysis of the NET pattern shows slow southward migration of convection anomalies from the northeastern periphery of the Tibetan Plateau to southern China, in relation to southward migration of the mei-yu front caused by simultaneous amplification of upper- and low-level waves north of the YHRBs. In the AT pattern, convection anomalies migrate eastward from the western Tibetan Plateau to the YHRBs. A low-level vortex is created at the lee of the plateau by eastward-moving upper-level wave packets and associated convection from the plateau. Rossby wave trains along the Asian jet characterize the upper-level circulation anomalies in the two patterns.

Sensitivity of precipitation diurnal cycle to the horizontal grid spacing was investigated using a mesoscale model without cumulus parameterization. Four numerical experiments with changing horizontal resolution are performed over one month with NCEP reanalysis boundary forcing. The studied range of grid spacing is from 3.5 km to 28 km which has been known as the intermediate scale to simulate mesoscale systems with/without cumulus parameterization. The target area is the Tibetan Plateau where pronounced diurnal cycle of convective systems is observed during the spring season.
Lower resolution runs (14 and 28 km grid) show delayed formation and delayed mature stage of the cumulus convection in comparison to satellite observations. On the other hand, higher resolution runs (3.5 and 7 km grid) reproduce the proper development of the clouds after local noon which is consistent with observations. The total hydrometeor content and rainfall rate increase with grid size. Such systematic relationship of resolution dependencies are confirmed even in the monthly mean diurnal cycle, although most of previous studies examined only short periods. These results suggest that finer resolution at less than 7 kilometer is necessary to simulate realistic phase of the precipitation diurnal cycle over the Tibetan Plateau.
The mechanism that is responsible for the resolution dependency is discussed. We suggest that the daytime convection which initially occurs due to unstable stratification over the Tibetan Plateau in spring tends to have a horizontal scale smaller than that is resolvable by the coarse resolution runs. The delayed cloud formation induces larger downward shortwave radiation, which increases surface fluxes and results in too strong rainfall in the coarser resolution runs.
