In order to lower the operating costs of a large scale probe vehicle system, countermeasures for decreasing operating cost of the system, such as lowering of data polling frequency and use an existing fleet management system, are necessary. Such countermeasures, however, reduce the accuracy of the traffic information that is generated from the collected probe vehicle data. In this study, the authors developed several map matching algorithms that can be applied to low frequency and little information probe vehicle data. These map matching algorithms were verified using actual probe vehicle data collected in the area around Nagoya, Japan. The results show that the data can be map matched with a high degree of accuracy by combining an appropriate link cost, generation of reasonable candidate routes, evaluation of the routes, and introducing the concept of a driver's route choice.

Automated truck lanes (ATL) is a future technology for alleviating high proportion of truck usage. This paper proposes a hybrid microscopic-mesoscopic traffic simulator that can be used to precisely estimate the changes in traffic flows that would result from introduction of ATL on large-scale road networks. An integration framework is designed to ensure consistency of route choice and synchronization between mesoscopic and microscopic simulators. Microscopic car-following and lane-changing models are extended to reflect detailed interactions between cars and trucks. Three cases are simulated to evaluate the impact of ATL on traffic flows, proportion of trucks, travel time, and performance in total travel time saving. Finally, an analysis of safety and the effect of road incidents on travel time are also conducted using the hybrid simulator. Simulation results indicate that ATL can change traffic volumes not only on the expressway itself (New Tomei-Meishin Expressway) but also on the other expressways in the network, leading to shorter travel times and improved safety. For a more precise evaluation, the ATL system should be analyzed as part of a large-scale road network.

A method for updating dynamic O-D matrix using observed link travel speed of probe vehicles is developed. The method consists of two parts: link flow of total traffic is estimated from the link travel speed of probe vehicles, and dynamic O-D matrix is estimated using the estimated link flow and historical O-D matrix. The k-v function derived from the acceleration model by Gazis, et al. (1961) is applied to the link flow estimate, and the entropy maximization model proposed by Willumsen (1984) is applied to the dynamic O-D demand estimate. By using Bayesian inference approach, the variance of the estimate as well as the point estimate of link flow is obtained. Also, the entropy maximization model is extended to incorporate the difference in the reliability of link flow estimates among links. The results of a case study show that the accuracy of the estimated dynamic O-D matrix is improved by the proposed method, and that the accuracy of the link flow estimates obtained in dynamic O-D demand estimation is improved by the proposed method, too.

This study analyzes the effect of road pricing using a model with the following characteristics: 1) integration of trip generation (i.e. activity choice), destination choice, mode choice and route choice; 2) consideration of hourly traffic condition variations including queue evolution; and 3) approximate reproduction of trip chain along the time axis. An evaluation of road pricing in the Nagoya Metropolitan Area shows that pricing leads to an effective improvement in the environment as a result of a reduced number of car trips, and at the same time, there is a great reduction in the number of visitors because there is a change of destination and only a small shift to railway.

This research aims at developing the technique for updating dynamic O-D matrices based on the information from probe-vehicles. However, probe-vehicle does not provide the information on the traffic counts and the observed speed varies among probe-vehicles even when the traffic condition is similar. We propose several techniques for estimating traffic counts from observed link travel speeds and the O-D matrices are updated based on the estimated traffic counts information. The results show that the O-D matrices updated by using the variance of estimated traffic counts or the number probe-samples as representing reliability of probe-information are more accurate than those by not using such indicators.

In the central city area, the vehicles queuing to the parking lot and/or illegally parked on-street cause serious road traffic congestion. This study develops discrete-continuous choice model of parking location and duration in order to better understanding drivers' parking behavior. We apply a simultaneous estimation technique to overcome an inconsistency of a conventional estimation result, and apply WESML estimator because of choice-based sample obtained from mail-in survey. As a result of the analysis concerning the parking price discount measure for reducing the illegal parking on-street, it was shown that the results with a discrete-continuous choice model were greatly different from those with a usual MNL model and a regression model.

The reproducibility of developed model is shown under application to the Nagoya Metropolitan Area, Japan. Furthermore, as case study, we evaluate road pricing and railway's fare discount. These results suggest that the model allows us to compare various TDM policies effectively and evaluate in detail.

The cost and capacity of the communication between probe vehicles and the operation center impose restrictions on the number of probe vehicles and thus it is expected that reliability of probe reports can be obtained by relatively small number of probe vehicles. Travel time on a signalized link is a multi-peak distribution because there are several subgroups divided by turning movements and intersection delay at downstream. When sample size is small, sampling error arises and it is difficult to estimate population mean using sample mean directly. In this paper, the sources of sampling errors are discussed and an estimation method that minimizes the effect of the sampling errors are proposed. The result shows that performance level of a signalized link can be estimated reliably using the proposed method and small size sample.
