We investigate how banks’ degree of imperfect competition affects economic growth. This study explores an imperfect competition model in banking in an overlapping generations model with endogenous growth. We demonstrate the following results. First, an increase in the deposit interest rate increases the steady growth rate of the economy. Second, as competition among banks intensifies, the economic growth rate increases. Third, it is ambiguous as to whether a higher lending interest rate caused by an increase in productivity results in a higher economic growth rate. In our numerical exercises, we exemplify the possibility that an increase in the lending interest rate increases the growth rate.

This paper examines the transfer problem between two countries when a donor exhibits altruistic utility toward a recipient in a one-sector overlapping generations model.We demonstrate that if the donor has a larger marginal propensity to save than the recipient, the donor's altruism never contributes to donor enrichment irrespective of the degree of the donor's altruism. Donor enrichment occurs only if the donor has a smaller marginal propensity to save and a sufficiently high level of altruism. These findings imply that the altruism of a donor toward a recipient does not necessarily explain the motivation to voluntarily provide a transfer.

This paper investigates optimal monetary policy in an overlapping-generations model with endogenous growth fueled by the accumulation of human capital and underacash-in-advance constraint. We consider the case where the government finances public education fully by seigniorage. Three main results are obtained. First, there exists an optimal money growth rate that maximizes the economic growth rate along the steady
growth path. Second, on this path, the Laffer curve of seigniorage takes the maximum. Finally, the money growth rate for maximizing seigniorage along the steady growth path, which also leads to maximization of the economic growth rate, is lower than that for
maximizing seigniorage in the present period.

This paper examines a simple overlapping generations model of human capital accumulation under both the public and private education regimes. Both young individuals and their parents allocate time to human capital accumulation. Under the public education regime, the government collects tax to finance expenditure for education resources. We show that there exists a level of tax which maximizes the speed of human capital accumulation because of parental teaching; and, if the government chooses tax rates adequately, human capital grows faster and welfare levels become higher under the public education regime than under the private.

This study investigates how intergenerational altruism affects the possibility of the transfer paradox occurring in a two-country, one-sector overlapping generations model. We derive the conditions underwhich the transfer paradox occurs in our model where a generation within each country has altruismtoward the subsequent generation. Contrary to earlier results in the literature, we find that altruism doesnot enter the conditions under which the transfer paradox occurs in the steady state. Moreover, we showthat although altruism affects the condition of the transfer paradox along the transition path, its effecton this condition vanishes as the economy converges to the steady state.

We compare growth rates in the absence and presence of life insurance using an overlapping generations framework with human capital accumulation to clarify how life insurance contributes to economic growth through the education investment of individuals depending on economic circumstances.
Our results show that, as expected, the growth rate is higher when there is life insurance if the rate of time preference or the productivity of human capital accumulation is sufficiently low and if the income loss induced from lifetime uncertainty is moderate. However, if the income loss is sufficiently large, the growth rate is lower when there is life insurance.

We construct an overlapping-generations model where individualsevade capital income tax and carry out the short- and the long-run analyses to abstract the pure effects of policy parameters such as the capital income tax rate and the penalty rate on welfare levels. We show that: (i) undeclared savings may increase both in the short- and the long-run, even when the tax rate (the penalty rate) decreases (increases); (ii) there are trade-offs within each policy and across policies regarding the welfare effects in the short- and the long-run; (iii) both the welfare levels and the government revenue increase in the long-run if the tax rate decreases or the penalty rate increases, as long as the elasticities of such parameters
on capital stock are sufficiently large.

Based on the results of Tekeuchi et.al. [11] (2008) “a questionnaire of administrative and fiscal reform (Sep. 2006)," in Tokai region's three prefectures, we make a cluster analysis for the municipalities which did not merge from 2000 to 2006 by the reasons, so as to clarify what the crucial reasons for clustering these municipalities are. To make the clustering more objective, we also make a cross tabulation analysis by using the results of the questionnaires on how the Trinity Reform affects administrative and fiscal reforms of the municipalities.
The Trinity Reform, originally for increasing the freedom of administrative and fiscal management of municipalities, was conducted in parallel with municipal merger, originally for raising the efficiency of them. After the Reform, some researches tried to make sure whether, or how, it affected the administration and fiscal situation in municipalities. In Tokai region, Tekeuchi et.al. [11] (2008) given above carried out the questionnaire survey in 2006. Additionally, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications [10] (2008) investigated why the municipalities merged and what the effects of the municipal merger were, by sending a questionnaire for all municipalities in Japan. Both of these questionnaires, however, only showed the descriptive statistics, so that the tendency of the answers of municipalities was not adequately captured.
To make up this shortage, we will use the replies to the 2 questionnaires in Chapter 1 and 3 in Chapter 2 from the municipalities which did not merge, among 5 chapters of “1. Municipal Merger," “2. The Trinity Reform and Devolution," “3. The Improvement of the Administration," “4. The Future Image of the Administration of the Municipalities" and “5. Fiscal Situation of the Municipalities" in Tekeuchi et.al. [11] (2008), to make both the cluster analysis and the cross tabulation analysis.

The objective of this paper is, using Japan's macroeconomic and fiscal data, to calibrate the effects of the reforms in government expenditure and public pension on GDP, tax revenue and the welfare levels when public debts are assumed to be constant, within a framework of an overlapping generations model. Our main findings are: (i) in the short-run, the welfare levels in the case of low population growth rate become higher than that in the case of high population growth rate, however, in the long-run, this result becomes the other way around, (ii) the level of the tax revenue, in the long-run, must be bigger compared to the present level, and (iii) from the viewpoint of the maximum sustainable public debt, the present level of capital stock might be “over-accumulated."

This paper examines how international capital mobility brings about transfer paradoxes in Galor and Polemarchakis's (1987) overlapping generations model. The analysis is confined to the case where two countries have the same economic circumstances except time preferences, and the economy is dynamically efficient. In this instance, when a permanent transfer is carried out, a strong paradox arises such that the recipient country becomes worse off and the donor country better off. This paper, incorporating public goods into a two-country Diamond overlapping generations model, shows the existence of a transfer paradox. Governments supply public goods, in addition to imposing a tax on workers and issuing government bonds. In the short-run, only a weak paradox can occur, but in the long-run, both weak and strong paradoxes can occur. These paradoxical results depend on government policy concerning the level of supply of public goods, and on the difference in the levels of externality of public goods between the donor country and the recipient country. The transitional economy will also be discussed.
