Symmetry and Topology in Superconductors, odd-frequency pairing and edge states Invited Reviewed

Superconductivity is a phenomenon where the macroscopic quantum coherence appears due to the pairing of electrons. This offers a fascinating arena to study the physics of symmetry breaking, i.e., broken gauge symmetry. However, the important symmetries in superconductors are not only the gauge invariance. Especially, the symmetry properties of the pairing, i.e., the parity and spin-singlet/spin-triplet, determine the physical properties of the superconducting state. Recently it has been recognized that there is the important third symmetry of the pair amplitude, i.e., even or odd parity with respect to the frequency. The conventional uniform superconducting states correspond to the even-frequency pairing, but the recent finding is that the odd-frequency pair amplitude arises in the spatially non-uniform situation quite ubiquitously. Especially, this is the case in the Andreev bound state (ABS) appearing at the surface/interface of the sample. The other important recent development is on the nontrivial topological aspects of superconductors. As the band insulators are classified by topological indices into (i) conventional insulator, (ii) quantum Hall insulator, and (iii) topological insulator, also are the gapped superconductors. The influence of the nontrivial topology of the bulk states appears as the edge or surface of the sample, i.e., bulk-edge correspondence. In the superconductors, this leads to the formation of zero energy ABS (ZEABS). Therefore, the ABSs at the surface/interface of the superconductors are the place where the symmetry and topology meet each other which offer the stage of rich physics. In this review, we discuss the physics of ABS from the viewpoint of the odd-frequency pairing, the topological bulk-edge correspondence, and the interplay of these two issues. It is described how the symmetry of the pairing and topological indices determine the absence/presence of the ZEABS, its energy dispersion, and properties as the Majorana fermions. Various related issues such as the Helium 3, transport of Majorana fermions, and tunneling spectroscopies are also briefly discussed.

Topology of Andreev bound states with flat dispersion Reviewed

Theory of dispersionless Andreev bound states on surfaces of time-reversal-invariant unconventional superconductors is presented. The generalized criterion for the dispersionless Andreev bound state is derived from the bulk-edge correspondence, and the chiral spin structure of the dispersionless Andreev bound states is argued from which the Andreev bound state is stabilized. We then summarize the criterion in a form of index theorems. The index theorems are proved in a general framework to certify the bulk-edge correspondence. As concrete examples, we discuss the (i) d xy -wave superconductor, (ii) p x -wave superconductor, and (iii) noncentrosymmetric superconductors. In the last example, we find a peculiar time-reversal-invariant Majorana fermion. The time-reversal-invariant Majorana fermion shows an unusual response to the Zeeman magnetic field, which can be used to identify it experimentally.

A topological superconductor (TSC) is characterized by the topologically protected gapless surface state that is essentially an Andreev bound state consisting of Majorana fermions. While a TSC has not yet been discovered, the doped topological insulator CuxBi2Se3, has been predicted to possess a topological superconducting state. We report that the point-contact spectra on the cleaved surface of superconducting Cu x Bi 2 Se 3 present a zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) which signifies unconventional superconductivity. Theoretical considerations of all possible superconducting states help us conclude that this ZBCP is due to Majorana fermions and gives evidence for a topological superconductivity in Cu x Bi 2 Se 3.

We investigate the energy dispersion of the edge states in zigzag silicene, germanene and stanene nanoribbons with and without hydrogen termination based on a multi-orbital tight-binding model. Since the low buckled structures are crucial for these materials, both the π and σ orbitals have a strong influence on the edge states, different from the case for graphene nanoribbons. The obtained dispersion of helical edge states is nonlinear, similar to that obtained by first-principles calculations. On the other hand, the dispersion derived from the single-orbital tight-binding model is always linear. Therefore, we find that the non-linearity comes from the multi-orbital effects, and accurate results cannot be obtained by the single-orbital model but can be obtained by the multi-orbital tight-binding model. We show that the multi-orbital model is essential for correctly understanding the dispersion of the edge states in tetragen nanoribbons with a low buckled geometry.

It has been noted that certain surfaces of Weyl semimetals have bound states forming open Fermi arcs, which are never seen in typical metallic states. We show that the Fermi arcs enable them to support an even more exotic surface state with crossed flat bands in the superconducting state. We clarify the topological origin of the crossed flat bands and the relevant symmetry that stabilizes the cross point. Our symmetry analysis is applicable to known candidate materials of time-reversal breaking Weyl semimetals. We also discuss their possible experimental verification by tunneling spectroscopy.

We theoretically study a possible topological superconductivity in the interacting two layers of Rashba systems, which can be fabricated by the heterostructures of semiconductors and oxides. The hybridization, which induces the gap in the single particle dispersion, and the electron-electron interaction between the two layers leads to the novel phase diagram of the superconductivity. It is found that the topological superconductivity without breaking time-reversal symmetry is realized when (i) the Fermi energy is within the hybridization gap, and (ii) the interlayer interaction is repulsive, both of which can be satisfied in realistic systems. Edge channels are studied in a tight-binding model numerically, and the several predictions on experiments are also given.

We present a general theory of the proximity effect in junctions between diffusive normal metals (DN)
and superconductors. Various possible symmetry classes in a superconductor are considered: evenfrequency
spin-singlet even-parity (ESE) state, even-frequency spin-triplet odd-parity state, oddfrequency
spin-triplet even-parity (OTE) state and odd-frequency spin-singlet odd-parity state. It is shown
that the pair amplitude in a DN belongs, respectively, to an ESE, OTE, OTE, and ESE pairing state since
only the even-parity s-wave pairing is possible due to the impurity scattering.

We demonstrate that, contrary to standard wisdom, the lowest-order Josephson coupling is possible
between odd- and even-frequency superconductors. The origin of this effect is the induced odd- (even-
)frequency pairing component at the interface of bulk even- (odd-)frequency superconductors. The
resulting current-phase relation is found to be proportional to cos\phi, where \phi is the macroscopic phase difference between the two superconductors.

We analyze the transport properties of contacts between unconventional superconductor and normal diffusive
metal in the framework of the extended circuit theory. We obtain a general boundary condition for the
Keldysh-Nambu Green's functions at the interface that is valid for arbitrary transparencies of the interface.
This allows us to investigate the voltage-dependent conductance ~conductance spectrum! of a diffusive normal
metal ~DN!/ unconventional singlet superconductor junction in both ballistic and diffusive cases. For d-wave
superconductors, we calculate conductance spectra numerically for different orientations of the junctions,
resistances, Thouless energies in DN, and transparencies of the interface. We demonstrate that conductance
spectra exhibit a variety of features including a V-shaped gaplike structure, zero bias conductance peak ~ZBCP!
and zero bias conductance dip.

We propose that the spin-triplet pairing mechanism due to disconnected Fermi surfaces proposed in
our previous study [Phys. Rev. B 63, 174507 (2001)] may be at work in a recently discovered
superconductor NaxCoO2 yH2O. We introduce a single band effective model that takes into account
the pocketlike Fermi surfaces along with the van Hove singularity near the K point found in the band
calculation results. Applying the fluctuation exchange method and solving the linearized Eliashberg
equation, the most dominant pairing is found to have spin-triplet f-wave symmetry, where the nodes of
the gap function do not intersect the pocket Fermi surfaces. The presence of finite Tc is suggested in
sharp contrast to cases when the gap nodes intersect the Fermi surface.

Charge transport properties of a diffusive normal metal/triplet superconductor (DN/TS) junction are studied
based on the Keldysh-Nambu quasiclassical Green's function formalism. Contrary to the unconventional singlet
superconductor junction case, the mid-gap Andreev resonant state at the interface of the TS is shown to
enhance the proximity effect in the DN. The total resistance of the DN/TS junction is drastically reduced and
is completely independent of the resistance of the DN in the extreme case. Such anomalous transport accompanies
a giant zero-bias peak in the conductance spectra and a zero-energy peak of the local density of states
in the DN region. These striking features manifest the presence of novel proximity effect peculiar to triplet
superconductor junctions.
