We have observed 7 new transits of the `hot Jupiter' WASP-5b using a 61 cm
telescope located in New Zealand, in order to search for transit timing variations
(TTVs) which can be induced by additional bodies existing in the system. When
combined with other available photometric and radial velocity (RV) data, we find
that its transit timings do not match a linear ephemeris; the best fit χ 2 values is 32.2
with 9 degrees of freedom which corresponds to a confidence level of 99.982 % or 3.7 σ.
This result indicates that excess variations of transit timings has been observed, due
either to unknown systematic effects or possibly to real TTVs. The TTV amplitude
is as large as 50 s, and if this is real, it cannot be explained by other effects than
that due to an additional body or bodies. From the RV data, we put an upper limit
on the RV amplitude caused by the possible secondary body (planet) as 21 m s- 1 ,
which corresponds to its mass of 22-70 M
⊕
over the orbital period ratio of the two
planets from 0.2 to 5.0. From the TTVs data, using the numerical simulations, we
place more stringent limits down to 2 M
⊕
near 1:2 and 2:1 mean motion resonances
(MMRs) with WASP-5b at the 3 σ level, assuming that the two planets are co-planer.
We also put an upper limit on excess of Trojan mass as 43 M
⊕
(3 σ) using both RV
and photometric data. We also find that if the possible secondary planet has non- or
a small eccentricity, its orbit would likely be near low-order MMRs. Further follow-up
photometric and spectroscopic observations will be required to confirm the reality of
the TTV signal, and results such as these will provide important information for the
migration mechanisms of planetary systems.

The LHCf experiment aims to improve knowledge of forward neutral particle production spectra at the
LHC energy which is relevant for the interpretation of air shower development of high energy cosmic
rays. Two detectors, each composed of a pair of sampling and imaging calorimeters, have been installed
at the forward region of IP1 to measure p 0 energy spectra above 600 GeV. In this paper, we present a
Monte Carlo study of the p 0 measurements to be performed with one of the LHCf detectors for pro-
ton–proton collisions at ffiffi s p
¼ 14 TeV. In approximately 40 min of operation at luminosity 0:8
10 29 cm 2 s 1 during the beam commissioning phase of LHC, about 1.5 10 4 p 0 events are expected to
be obtained at two transverse positions of the detector. The backgrounds from interactions of secondary
particles with beam pipes and interactions of beam particles with residual gas in the beam pipes are
expected to be less than 0.1% of the signal from p 0 s. We also discuss the capability of LHCf measurements
to discriminate between the various hadron interaction models that are used for simulation of high
energy air showers, such as DPMJET3.03, QGSJETII-03, SIBYLL2.1 and EPOS1.99.

We present a search for non-zero theta_{13} and deviations of sin^2 theta_{23} from 0.5 in the oscillations of atmospheric neutrino data from Super-Kamiokande -I, -II, and -III. No distortions of the neutrino flux consistent with non-zero theta_{13} are found and both neutrino mass hierarchy hypotheses are in agreement with the data. The data are best fit at Delta m^2 = 2.1 x 10^-3 eV^2, sin^2 theta_{13} = 0.0, and sin^2 theta_{23} =0.5. In the normal (inverted) hierarchy theta_{13} and Delta m^2 are constrained at the one-dimensional 90% C.L. to sin^2 theta_{13} < 0.04 (0.09) and 1.9 (1.7) x 10^-3 < Delta m^2 < 2.6 (2.7) x 10^-3 eV^2. The atmospheric mixing angle is within 0.407 <= sin^2 theta_{23} <= 0.583 at 90% C.L.

We present the discovery of a Neptune-mass planet OGLE-2007-BLG-368Lb with a planet-star mass ratio of q=[9.5 +/- 2.1] x10^{-5} via gravitational microlensing. The planetary deviation was detected in real-time thanks to the high cadence of the MOA survey, real-time light curve monitoring and intensive follow-up observations. A Bayesian analysis returns the stellar mass and distance at M_l = 0.64_{-0.26}^{+0.21} M_\sun and D_l = 5.9_{-1.4}^{+0.9} kpc, respectively, so the mass and separation of the planet are M_p = 20_{-8}^{+7} M_\oplus and a = 3.3_{-0.8}^{+1.4} AU, respectively. This discovery adds another cold Neptune-mass planet to the planetary sample discovered by microlensing, which now comprise four cold Neptune/Super-Earths, five gas giant planets, and another sub-Saturn mass planet that could be a cold Neptune or Super-Earth. The discovery of these ten cold exoplanets by the microlensing method implies that the mass function of cold exoplanets scales as \Psi(q) \propto q^{-1.7+/- 0.2} with a 95% confidence level upper limit of n < -1.35 (where \Psi(q) \propto q^n). The microlensing sensitivity region is largely beyond the snow-line, so this implies that Neptune-mass planets are at least three times more common than Jupiters, beyond the snow-line at the 95% confidence level.

It has been hypothesized that large fluxes of neutrinos may be created in astrophysical 'cosmic accelerators.' The primary background for a search for astrophysical neutrinos comes from atmospheric neutrinos, which do not exhibit the pointlike directional clustering that characterizes a distant astrophysical signal. We perform a search for neutrino point sources using the upward-going muon data from three phases of operation (SK-I, SK-II, and SK-III) spanning 2,623 days of live time taken from April 1, 1996 to August 11, 2007. The search looks for signals from suspected galactic and extragalactic sources, transient sources, and unexpected sources. We find interesting signatures from two objects--RX J1713.7-3946 (97.5-99.8% CL) and GRB 991004D (95.3% CL)--but the signatures lack compelling statistical significance. We set limits on the flux and fluence of neutrino point sources above energies of 1.6 GeV.

We have searched for proton decays via p -> e^+ pi^0 and p -> mu^+ pi^0 using data from a 91.7 kiloton year exposure of Super-Kamiokande-I and a 49.2 kiloton year exposure of Super-Kamiokande-II. No candidate events were observed with expected backgrounds induced by atmospheric neutrinos of 0.3 events for each decay mode. From these results, we set lower limits on the partial lifetime of 8.21033 and 6.61033 years at 90% confidence level for p -> e^+ pi^0 and p -> mu^+ pi^0 modes, respectively.

We report the development of a proton identification method for the Super-Kamiokande detector. This new tool is applied to the search for events with a single proton track, a high purity neutral current sample of interest for sterile neutrino searches. After selection using a neural network, we observe 38 events in the combined SK-I and SK-II data corresponding to 2285.1 days of exposure, with an estimated signal to background ratio of 1.6 to 1. Proton identification was also applied to a direct search for charged-current quasi-elastic (CCQE) events, obtaining a high precision sample of fully kinematically reconstructed atmospheric neutrinos, which has not been previously reported in water Cherenkov detectors. The CCQE fraction of this sample is 55%, and its neutrino (as opposed to anti-neutrino) fraction is 91.7+/-3%. We selected 78 mu-like and 47 e-like events in the SK-I and SK-II data set. With this data, a clear zenith angle distortion of the neutrino direction itself is reported in a sub-GeV sample of muon neutrinos where the lepton angular correlation to the incoming neutrino is weak. Our fit to nu_mu->nu_tau oscillations using the neutrino L/E distribution of the CCQE sample alone yields a wide acceptance region compatible with our previous results and excludes the no-oscillation hypothesis at 3 sigma.

We perform a search for neutrinos coincident with GRB 080319B, the brightest GRB observed to date, in a +/- 1,000 s window. No statistically significant coincidences were observed and we thereby obtain an upper limit on the fluence of neutrino-induced muons from this source. From this we apply reasonable assumptions to derive a limit on neutrino fluence from the GRB.
